Hello all,

I’ve been lurking from time to time, always digging into a possible Homegrown purchase but sadly it never happened. However, the wait is finally over and I am now the proud owner of a 2000 Homegrown Pro. I picked it up a couple days ago and had yesterday to dig through my spare part bins and mock up some components. Here is what I came up with… a rigid 96’er with a 1×8 drivetrain. I’m not a weight weenie especially being a bulky ex-rugby player but I am trying to build the lightest bike I’ve ever owned and that 2lbs 9ozs frame (if you believe the 2000 catalog) is an awesome starting point to a light weight build. The highlight of the build is the Rick Hunter SuperCrown 29’er/CX fork, it’s an earlier SuperCrown and the filet brazing is beautifully done. The rest of the build consists mostly of PAUL, XTR, Thomson, and AC components. Hanging me up right now is needing to find an ICBM headset as my frame came with the “tomato” seat clamp but no headset. Thankfully my buddy who wrenches at my LBS thinks he has two and if so he’ll sell me one (fingers crossed).

Anyway, just glad to finally call myself a proud owner! Thanks for all the insight along the way that you didn’t know you provided, very helpful and much appreciated! Unfortunately, my mock up photos won’t load so I’m able to share my Homegrown with you but I’ll look into a url hosting site and work on getting them posted.

    Thanks again!

Looks like a nice clean build. Just noticed the 29 front wheel. Are you running a 650b on the rear? What rear brake are you running?

    Hello livernose,

Thanks for the kind words! I am building this as a straight across parts swap from one of my other bikes. My goal is an on budget, weight weenie, parts (on hand) bike. I’ve build a number of parts bikes, a few budget builds, but I’ve never really built up a weight weenie bike. Being the frame is 2 lbs 9 ozs (assuming the 2000 catalog is accurate), it would seem to be the ideal base for a light weight hardtail racer. I’m running a straight ahead 29″/26″ set, I’m not converting to 650b anytime soon. I installed a PAUL Neo-Retro canti brake in the rear. The Neo-Retro balances well with the Avid BB7 mechanical disc brake up front. I considered running some Avid hydraulic brakes I have in my spare bin but that would require me to spend money which would totally blow my $100.00 budget for the build. Thankfully a seller on Ebay in Taiwan posted 5 NOS ICBM stock headsets this past week. Being I needed one, I snagged it and the price was more than fair at $27.00 with free shipping. The only bummer is the 2 to 4 week delivery time, it’ll give me time to sort out the rest of the details. With that hurdle handled, I should come in under budget. I paid $35.00 for the frame with the Tomato seatpost clamp, another $25.00 for a chain plus cables & housing, and $27.00 for a new Tange/Cane Creek headset… $87.00 invested is something I’m very proud of and diggin’ it in a big way!!!

    Thanks again!
