26+ tire clearance

'ello all.

I was chatting up a guy on Pinkbike and he said something about his homegrown fitting 26+ and immediately rethought my extremely custom 27.5 conversion. So, before I take on *another* project... I figured I'd ask the community if there's any valid data on this.

For the record, I have an 01 comp frame in 17"

Cheers!

I don't have a 2000 or newer Homegrown to check clearance with, BUT my 17" 1998 hardtail will fit 26x2.8" Maxxis DHR tires.  Only good for 1x setups as the tire would hit a front derailleur.  I'll post up pics tomorrow.

I'd like to see the photos. 2.8 is a meaty tire.

I have a 2001 Limited I built as a 27.5. I used  Schwalbe  Thunder Burt 2.10 with enough clearance  in the rear to put a little fender on it to protect the frame. I used a Manitou 27.5 fork in the front and   didn't like it. It sat the front end too high for my liking, so I switched back to a 2004 Rockshox SID. Designed for a 26" wheel, but has enough clearance to run 27.5 tires on it.

Well, I ordered a surly dirt wizard in 26x2.75 so we'll see what happens in my 01 frame.

Cheers!

Huh, I guess all the narrow tire requirements I was remembering were before 1X was a thing.  Fool

Now I need to check my parts inventory and get some tires...

It helped to have the tire somewhat deflated to get it through the brake posts.  I then pumped it up to 40psi.  I would probably lower to 30psi in real life, but I wanted to see if it stretched out.

Also, that's my paint project frame back from sand-blast.  I'm going to try and paint it again when the weather warms up.

Gotcha. Will be interesting to see if there's any rub due to tire/rim flex. I was going to say the frame was looking good blasted!

Well, my 01 fits the 2.75 Surly, it's tight, but encouraging enough that I might try to squeeze a Ranger 2.8 in there.

So now I have another mad scientist project stuck in my head... JUST what I needed.

I don't have pics, but I put a 2.8 Ranger on an 01 Factory, using Flow MKIII rims. Works fine.

I'm not familiar with that rim. Do you know the width? I've been a fan of wider rims, so I'm curious if you think that 2.8 is too tight for a 30mm rim width.

Cheers!

The Flow MKIII is 29 mm internal. 30 external is about as narrow as I would go for a 2.8, but it's doable.
