Hello All,
It's been awhile since I posted, but I'm trying to get back into shape and drop a few pounds so the Homegrown's are coming to my rescue.
I've found a few riding buddies and was tired of getting dropped because they're all on gravel bikes, so I decided to convert a Homegrown to gravel duty.
Stock 19" 1998 Bass Boat Blue with Hayes 22mm mount. Threw on some 29er disc wheels with 700x35c tires and had plenty of clearance. Next was fitting a rear caliper. I wanted to use drop bars, so I began the hunt. Ended up finding used Shimano hydraulic 2x11's. That required the use of a Shimano caliper. First tried the common A2Z adapter, but not even old IS mount XTR calipers wanted to fit. Next tried a Magura IS mount caliper, but the lever and caliper didn't like each other with regards to fluid flow. Lastly decided to go with a new style flat road caliper with a custom made adapter.
The adapter design was very simple and is an easy install. Unfortunately for me was the cost to get a machine shop to make one ($145). Oh well, small price to pay to get this fabulous frame updated with modern tech. If anybody is interested in the .dwg file I will gladly share it for free. If the cost to manufacture these could be reduced I would be selling them myself, but I have my doubts that enough demand would exist.
Update 2021: There has been demand for these adapters. I get them 3D printed out of Stainless Steel now. USA buyers are charged $60/ea which includes USPS Priority Shipping. International Buyers are charged $70/ea which includes USPS First Class Shipping. I will try and keep these in stock. Message me directly if you want an adapter and I will give you my PayPal address. PayPal is currently my only form of payment accepted. Thanks All,
Very cool. Is that a 19" frame?

19” frame, yes. I usually ride 17” frames for mountain, but the 19” is a better size for me as a road/gravel bike.
The ugly post and seat were just what I threw on for the bike shops clamp holder to grip. I’ve goth both a thudbuster and/or USE SX suspension post for it. I’ve already re-routed the rear brake hose below the downtube for a cleaner look.

This is pretty cool. I need to revisit some geometry charts and think about doing this.
Makes me think about changing my 01 Limited to a gravel bike. What model levers are you using?

The levers are RS505 which are 2x11. They were the cheapest I was able to find at the time of the build. I paid $100 for the used pair without calipers. The rear caliper was cheap IMO at $35 and I had the hose and front caliper, so not an issue there. I haven't got to ride it yet due to work and freezing weather.

Nice job bikeric. Time to revisit a rear disc on my S20 Homegrown.
Thanks Tailendcharlie. I can send the Solidworks file to anybody that wants it.

That file would be awesome. Is there a specific program to open it?
Cheers.
I use SolidWorks at work, but can export it to whatever File type someone wishes. STEP, DWG, SLDPRT, etc.
I've even considered 3D printing a solid version (no honeycomb internally) and seeing if it would last. I wish we had purchased a 3D metal printer last year.

3D printed some lock out knobs for Rockshox SID forks, fits the 02 thru 05. Came out pretty well and work great, but since I don't have a 3D printer I had to pay someone for the set-up and the printing.

Nice knobs. I could print them for you for free as a one-off, (resale quantities however, would cost money for time/supplies), but I have limited color options. Pretty much gray or white.

Thanks, but I have about a dozen from when I had them printed before. I thought people would want them to replace the cracked ones from tightening the screws too tight or fior missing ones, but I have about a dozen sitting in a bag in my garage. The guy that printed them for me ended up being about $13 per knob and nobody wanted to pay that. My intent was to sell them for my cost but I guess that was too much. I have a lifetime supply now.

I'd love to try printing one of these adapters through Shapeways.
@bikeric, mind sending me the file in one of the following types: DAE, OBJ, X3D, X3DB, X3DV, or WRL?
Also feel free to upload it to their site and charge a few bucks for doing the legwork.
Thanks!
Hey @dyebhai, thanks for the Shapeways information. I had never heard of that site. I actually went on it, created an account, and ordered a seat clamp made out of steel that I have been holding off getting machined. The local machine shops are quoting me $350 to make this darn tear-drop shaped seat collar for a NOS 2011 GT GTR carbon frame I mistakenly purchased without a seat clamp. Those things are impossible to locate and are unique to the frame. The 3D print charge was $55.50 to my door.
The only file type I could upload to Shapeways was .stl. Send me a direct message with your email and I will be able to email you the .stl file free of charge!! I may start uploading 3D files to Shapeways to make some spare change.
Thanks,

Thank you, sir!
Hi there, If there is any chance you are still willing to share the .stl file for this adapter I would be forever in your debt. I have a special project for a friend and I'm having a terrible time getting an adapter that works.
Very cool bikeric. U might have just saved my beloved frame!! You have pm. Thx!!
The adapter also fits on Rocket 88 frames.
I have 2 aluminum examples sitting on my shelf. I could also send anyone the 3D model so that you can have it printed in metal from various online marketers.

Looks good!
are those aluminum examples fully functional? Can I have one of them to get my bike working again? Happy to reimburse costs.
also, dropped you a note about 3D model.
looking forward!
Sent @bikeric a PM, if anyone can share additional details for working examples 3d printed, or otherwise, please let me know (happy to cover costs). Otherwise, I'll see if he can share the shapeways file.
I sold my last machined aluminum adapter for Flat Road-Hayes 22mm. I have a 3D printed version (bronze-steel) on order for test. If it works just as well, I will get a few more as stock pieces to ship out when needed. I'll update again after the printed version arrives.

Thanks to @bikeric for parting with the last machined alu adapter. It is a perfect fit for me and has allowed me to finish this 2001 Independent Fabrication Steel Deluxe
I am definitely interested in at least two of them. I have the A2Z adaptor and a IS to post mount, but am very concerned about clearances. I sent an email before seeing this post. Let me know when you get some.
Also interested in one for my Schwinn rear
Hwy would love to get a copy of the file to get one printed/machined as well. So any help this would be appreciated!
steve
I'll get a few more printed out. Should be available in a few weeks.

Cheers Bikeric, let me know when and I'll sort out payment with you.
Me too!!
I'm getting 4 made. 2 will be silver plated steel, 1 gold plated steel and 1 stainless steel. Aluminum 3D printing is still too expensive to justify on such a small piece. Delivery to me will be Nov. 25 according to Sculpteo, so hold tight. I'll message here again when they come in.

I've got the 4 pieces in. I guess I need to offer them up first come - first served. Price on the picture includes shipping. I prefer PayPal for payment. Message me either directly or in this forum post with your color/material choice.

I will take a nickel plated. DM me.
What is the thickness of this adapter?
@bikeric: Can you send the printing file? I am located in Germany.
I'll take the other nickel plated. Cheers, Rob.
I guess that leave the gold one then? I'll grab it just in case!
Thanks,
Steve
OK. I've got 3 requests for the Nickel Plated. So....would any of the Nickel Plated prefer the SS for $60? The Nickle plated weigh 41 grams and the SS weighs 37 grams.

All pieces spoken for. I am getting a new batch of adapters made and will update when they are available. Not doing gold this time.

Hello everyone. New to the group. I've got a 2000 Schwinn Homegrown Pro that I am working on upgrading. I would like to purchase one of the adapters once you have them again, if possible. Also, had a question about brake compatability.Looks like you used a Shimano road disc brake. Does anyone know if these are compatible with Shimano MTB brakes or Sram?
These adapters were designed for use with the Shimano Road disc caliper. The Shimano road caliper is compatible with the shimano mountain levers. I have not test fit SRAM or any other brand of Flat Road calipers simply because I'm partial to Shimano equipment and prefer mineral oil to industrial brake fluid.
1996 HG Factory HT 17" Black w/Red Darts / 1999 Rocket 88 17" / 1998 HG 17"
I can attest the fact that flat mount will work with Shimano. It's easy enough to run a hose to a mtn master cylinder, vs a road. The stoke should be the same and same amount of fluid push thru.
I tried a TRP cable actuated flat caliper and it just didn't give me enough braking stoppage. So opting for the shimano road stuff instead.
Thanks for the info! Would love to purchase an adapter once the new batch is ready.
Just an FYI.... the A2Z adapter works great too and can run some great disk brakes. Magura run nicely. Even the xt and xtr calipers as well.
I have one of the A2Z adapters to convert from Hayes to IS mount, can sell that to anyone interested, $30+ship probably reasonable
I now have 0 adapters remaining. I'll get some more made, but it will be a few weeks before these become available again.
The red A2Z adapter pictured above will not allow you to use Shimano calipers. I have tried the ISO XTR calipers and every other caliper with the basic front adapter blocks. The only calipers that work on the Homegrown's with an A2Z adapter are older Magura ISO calipers and Hope Mono Mini's and they need to be the front specific to run a 160mm rotor on the rear.

I'll take one! PM sent.
