I will confirm tonight what P/N my Shimano caliper is, and post tomorrow.  At quick glance it looks like the model I'm using has a lower bleed nipple then your 105.  I apologize for causing you to go through multiple caliper options.  I had no idea Shimano's different models would vary so much.

Ordered Ultegra BR 8070 from Jenson.  None at my LBSs.  Looks like they have the forward offset.  If u can confirm the 8070 it'd be appreciated...

Fyi... ultegra 8070 and 105s (7070) don't work.  Frames are too large and the bleed valves won't clear on circa 2000 Homegrowns.  Shimano stuff is in short supply as the factory in Malaysia been closed due to covid.

There are a few of the BR-RS805 calipers on eBay right now.

Would those work with the rotors that came with the old Hayes (I think they're 6" / 160mm), or do I need to size down? Also, aside from the  BR-RS505 that the OP has used, has anyone had success with SLX / XT / XTR calipers? Thanks!

I do not know of any SLX, XT or XTR calipers with the flat road mount.  The Hayes 6" rotor will work perfectly.  These do NOT appear to bolt right on and fit 2000 model Homegrown hardtails, and probably not Sweet Spot frames either.

I'm going to try with these calipers: https://bike.shimano.com/en-EU/product/component/deore-xt-m8100/BR-M8110.html

Also, looking at your pics, it looks like my 2000 may have enough clearance. Either way I'll give it a try, and report back!

Huh.  I totally didn't know those existed.  Should work fine.

Yikes on the 2000 model though.  I am working on an adapter just for those bikes as the seat stay runs lower than the older models (or maybe just on smaller frames?).

Both my 2000s have a clamshell mount.  It won't permit any rotation. I tried two bricks and with a 180 or 200 rotor it may work.

If you're certain the 180mm rotor clears the frame then I can make a single piece adapter that stacks up like that.

Update, I was able to fit my XT calipers on, but required a bit of filing on both the chainstay and the actual bracket to get it to sit flush, and also be at the right angle.

Thanks Eric!

Thanks for the info and the pics!!  I'll get a couple made out of stainless steel and gold plated right away!!  If you don't like the gold plating you can always paint them black.  The gold will be similar to the color you see here.

@bikeeric, if you're getting those printed from the same place I do, (and I bet you are) that gold plating comes off easily with some Barkeeper's Friend. This was an unfortunate, untintentional lesson for me.

So I'm new to the forum and trying to gain an understanding of all the models and features of Homegrowns.

Am I understanding correctly that the bike in the original post is a 1998 hardtail with the 22mm disc brake mount?  I went to the "Homegrown Models" page trying to get more info but I'm not seeing a hardtail with the disc brake mount until the 2000 model year.  Just curious if this 1998 frame was special?

Thanks!

Very good catch!!  I guess the blue frame in question is actually a 1999 "Pro" model.  Not a Factory, but it did have the 22mm Hayes disc brake mount.

Do you think that was a late-run 1999 then...maybe when they were starting to incorporate the 22mm mount for the 2000 model year bikes?  Or is the page data below wrong, which is generating my confusion?  When I look at this page, I see the disc brake listed as "None" for a 1999 Pro Hardtail:

https://bonustomato.com/models/1999-homegrown-pro-ht

Sorry, I'm not trying to be annoying, just trying to understand what exists out in the wild.  Beautiful bike and appreciate your efforts to keep these frames "current".

Cheers!

There were definitely '99 bikes with the 22 mm disc mount, and supposedly a few '98s, though I doubt that's accurate.

The only disc mounts used on these bikes were the 22 mm Hayes mount and an IS mount. The IS mount is easily adapated to modern brakes, so no big deal there.

If you have an HG hardtail with the 22 mm mount, this is the best adapter out there for it.

If there are Bass Boat 1999s out there with the disc brake mount that can then be adapted with the option offered in this thread, then that is what I'll watch for.  Thanks for the reply!

No problem!  Maybe it was a mid-run/mid-year transition thing as well so you have a mix of frames without mounts and some with.  I've also seen differences in a bike frame that was sold as a complete bike versus a frameset.

I have a car that is challenging to buy parts for since is was right in the middle of a body/model year update, so some of the features were from existing model year, and some features were from the next.  I love having to explain things to parts guys every time I repair something.

Thanks!

Is that all the proof you have? Guess I can't just blame it on that bike...reading is fundamental. Fool

ETA: Looks like the Elite and Pro had the mount but the base model did not though it did have forged dropouts. Interesting. And yes, I fixed my mistakes. Thanks for catching them, guys.

It's bad enough that I have to clarify that my car doesn't have the Cali engine before I can select brake pads or whatever, I can't imagine mid-year car problems.

Guess I need to stop looking at forums and trying to parse out fine details late at night!  I kept looking in the "Brakes" section, assuming it would be mentioned there.

Bikes are more fun to work on...cars suck!

Hello there!

Great idea/design. I read every post in this thread, and would love to get my hands on this neat 3D printed adaptor for my Homegrown. It's getting harder and harder to find NOS v-brake Mavic and Shimano wheels. No one makes quality 26" rim brake compatible wheels today, and I wear out the rear brake track about every year, so rear disc conversion only makes sense. Verified PayPal user.

I wanted to bump this thread.  @bikeric - Did you ever get a new batch of these adapters made?  I should be taking delivery of a 1998 Homegrown Factory Susp. frame with the 22mm mount, so I will be needing something.

Thanks!

Sorry all, as I've been busy elsewhere and away from the Scwinn's.  I didn't have any plans to make more of these but there seems to be a demand for them (at least 5 in my messages).  I think I'll get another batch started shortly.  It will be a couple of months before they are ready to ship out.  I'll post up here again when they're ready.

I will buy one of these adaptors if you have another batch made.  Prefer stainless steel or nickel plated, but I'll take whatever you have.

I've been running the A2Z adaptor on my Bass Boat Blue Homegrown Pro for a while with a filed-down TRP Spyke caliper.  It's ok, but I'm looking to upgrade to hydraulic with a flat mount caliper.

Thanks!
