The 1997 Homegrown Hardtail ESP introduced SRAM components to the Homegrown line for the first time, with Grip Shift shifters, ESP 9.0 rear derailleur, and SRAM 9.0 brake levers actuating Deore XT v-brakes. The cassette and front derailleur were Deore XT and the Rock Shox Judy SL on the Factory XTR hardtail was replaced by a Judy XC, also with 63mm travel.

Like the two other non-Factory hardtail models, the Homegrown Hardtail ESP featured a 6061 aluminum frame made in Portland by Anodizing, Inc., and available either buffed or in “Killer Tomato Red.” The frame included the extruded chainstay yoke in place of the forged piece on the Yeti-made Factory hardtail and the addition of a gusset where the down tube joined the head tube. For 1997, these frames still had the rear brake boss for cantilever brakes though they came with v-brakes. Complete specs are on the left.
