ParticipantAny idea on weight. I have a 99 bass boat gold homegrown but with some heavy parts. My bike weighs in around 32 lbs. Thinking about upgrading the drivetrain to something lighter. Its a great bike that I took on many adventures.

MemberThis is my 2001 16″ Straight 6 that weighs in at 31lbs:
The specs are:
Rock Shox Recon 351
Chris King NoThreadSet headset
Interloc stem
Kona DH handlebar with Yeti grips
Shimano M952 XTR shifters and derailleurs with XT cassette
Shimano M755 XT 4 pot brakes
Raceface Turbine ISIS cranks and SKF 600 bottom bracket
Cook Bros Eggbeaters
Mavic Crossroc UST Disc
Kenda Nevegal UST 2.3
Thomson Elite 26.8 seatpost
SDG Ventura Comp Ti saddleThe bits on my Homegrown that are likely heavier than the Straight 6 are my brake adapters (running 203mm on the front with the step up adapter), chromoly saddle rails, everything else is probably of a comparable weight or lighter.

MemberI finally managed to get my 1999 weighed – it came it at an unexpected 31.5lbs which, for all the lightweight parts I selected for it, is pretty disappointing!

ParticipantAmazing how the final weight is what it is. Suspect a lot of the weight is in the drivetrain and front fork. Your build still looks sweet. Also amazing how fresh the ’99 4-banger looks even in 2014. Wouldn’t it be great if Schwinn made a carbon front triangle frame with a new Fox shox with CTD. That bike would be sweet if it existed.

MemberYes, the front fork is pretty heavy, its probably 1 pound heavier than the Recon 351 on the other bike. I’m not too sure how I could make the drivetrain lighter – perhaps going to a Chris King/ZTR wheelset and lighter tires might reap another half pound savings. The 31.5 weigh-in was also made with an Easton CT2 carbon seatpost and a SDG Ventura Comp Ti saddle both which were lighter than the Thomson Elite/SDG Aliso Cr-Mo combo.
I could probably do a mix-match of parts from both bikes to achieve the lightest weight possible, but the Straight 6 will eventually get my other Shiver SC fork I got for it when I locate a decent 20mm wheelset.

ParticipantMAybe switching to a 2×10 would also help. I also know that Kenda makes different versions of the same tire. I use knevegals on my current ride but choose the non-tubeless version weighing in at 688 gms per tire. Haven’t had a flat yet with the stan’s notube system.
