Was the rear triangle wider on the 1999 to accomodate a 9 speed casette?

Not sure, but I don’t think so. Measuring my 97 and my 99 and my 2001 there is no difference on the width of the frame. Both have 9 speed drive trains. OK, I just saw that your is a full suspension. Mine are hard tails.

    Thanks Jeff.
Checking around to see if I can go from 8 to 9 sp.
I was reading that Sram 9 sp. cassettes are narrower than Deore XT 9’s and measure the same as an 8 speed cassette..

Another option is a 20t Granny
I need low gears cuz I got too many years…

I run 9 speed 11-32 XT and XTR cassettes with XTR 950/952 hubs and have no problem. That’s on my 97 Underground, 97 Homegrown Factory, 99 Homegrown Pro and previously on a 1994 aluminum Underground. All those bikes were previously 8 speeds. Of course, I had to change the shifters. My daughter uses an XT 9 speed cassette on her 99 Homegrown Pro also. But they are all hard tails. I run a 2 X 10 speed set up on my other 97 Underground. It was previously an 8 speed. I don’t have a FS and am unsure of the width of the rear triangle.

    Thanks Jeff.
Will check at my public bike shop and get some opinions. Good to know!

ALL MTB 8 speed and 9 speed cassettes (and hubs) are interchangeable.
Besides that, you can see that the 1999 Homegrown Factory FS came with 9-speed drivetrain (scroll to the specs image).

    Woo Hoo!!

    John,
I know the 99’s had 9 speed but did not know if the rear triangle needed to be widened. Now I know…
    Thanks
