Schwinn Homegrown Model Identifier › Forums › Help with removing part of a bearing from my headtube
Hey folks I’ve got a kinda nasty situation going on with my trust old 2000 homegrown pro. When attempting to remove the bottom bearing of the headset (I was properly using the correct size bearing puller) the bearing broke instead of coming. It had been sitting unbuilt for a while due to lack of funds and perceived problems with the frame (I thought there was a crack but it turned out to only be a crack in the paint) and this bearing was pretty rusty and sloppy.

It had been sitting unbuilt for a while due to lack of funds and perceived problems with the frame (I thought there was a crack but it turned out to only be a crack in the paint) and this bearing was pretty rusty and sloppy. Anyway, now, instead of having the inner bearing races to push on, there is now no lip whatsoever with which to try and press the rusty remains of this bearing out of my headtube.
I’m about to attempt some high risk dremel surgery but thought I might post here to see if anyone has any less risky suggestions before I break out the metal cutting tools…
Thanks in advance for any help. I really want to save my baby (this frame was the bike that helped me fall in love with mtbiking).
I can’t offer any real help. Your situation is the main reason I prefer Homegrowns from 1999 or earlier. I thought the ICBM used the frame as the bearing race with the headtube machined internally. If that is the case, I would NOT try and “knock it out”. Have you tried soaking the headtube in penetrating oil?
i just ran in to the same problem last month, I soaked it in triflow over night, then after it was nice and lubricated, I took an old flat head screw driver and pryed it out from the bottom. If you want i can try and explain further or diagram it for you! ericontheroute@clear.net
