I bought this frame about a year ago and built it up with the intention of racing it. After many hours of labor, two test rides confirmed my worst fears. I am too tall for this bike. At 6’4″ I just dont fit good. I’ve tried stem risers, seatposts, you name it and nothing works so I am putting the bike up for sale and sticking with my 23″ Heckler. I am 99% sure its a 1996 based off the scans of the original schwinn adverts found on this site. The 96 model seemed to have some options (White Industry stuff) that was unique to the year group. Could be a 95 though. I don’t know definitively.
Components include:
Rockshox Judy Fork
XTR Rear (new)
XT Front (new)
XT Rapid Fire shifters (new, orginally had grip shifters)
Avid SD-20 brakes
Cane Creek Headset (new)
Specialized adjustable stem (new)
White Industries Cranks and Chainrings (original)
White Industires Wheelsets (original)
Sram rear cassette (new)
New Bars with Oury grips
The bike is listed on Ebay with plenty of pics. I’ve got over $700 invested in it but looking to get $600 out of it. Pedals and seat not included. Great bike with normal dings/scratches from regular use.

I’d double check the size with the information from the brochures they have on the site here. The easy one to check is the length of the top tube because that is always center to center.

I guess that solves the mystery of why the bike never really felt like it fit me good. I just measured and it is a 19″ frame. Feel dumb for taking it for granted that the guy I bought it from knew what he was talking about. Lesson learned and I guess I need to re-title the heading of this post and the listing on EBAY. It’s actually kind of a good thing because I would imagine that 19″ is appealing to a bigger market than 21″ is anyway. Thanks again for the catch.
March 1, 2011 at 4:31 am #3129tmax12MemberJust got contacted by another Bonus Tomatoer who saw the bike on EBAY. He asked me to take some measurements as he thought the bike might be a 21″ as originally listed. At this point it is getting kind of ridiculous. Here are the measurements which I bounced off the specs listed on the catalog scans for the 96 models:
from center of BB to the top of seat collar= 20.5
Headtube length is a smidge over 5.5 inches which makes it the 140mm listed under 21″ in the specs
Standover height is just over 31″ which synchs up with the 31.4″ in the scans for a 21″
Now here’s the fun part. Toptube comes somewhere between 23 1/4 and 23 1/2 which puts it squarely between being a 19″er and a 21″er.
So the preponderance of the measurements indicate that this bike is more a 21″ than a 19″. Before I change the posting on EBay again or the title to this post, could I get some feedback from the forum

I would trust the actual numbers you have over what I see on an internet pic. It could be the wall behind your bike in the picture makes the geometry of the bike appear a little off…the seat tube length on yours vs the pic I posted look different.

And, if there’s a gap where they meet at the headtube, then it’s a 21. The best measurement is the center of bottom bracket, to the top of the seat tube collar. It’s a good looking bike!
