Converting to an SS is very straight forward. You’ll either need to use a tensioner (I use a Soulcraft Convert), find that magic gear combination that gets you perfect chain tension, or use a half link for your chain of choice.
I saw that bike on the local Craigslist and almost popped for it, but my wife would have killed me. That looks to be a very typical anodizing, not powder coated. As for the decals, there was an N-Lightened badge on ebay awhile back. I’m sure they pop up from time to time, just have to keep your eyes peeled for one.

I bought this frame last year on Ebay as a NOS, never built, pristine, work of art. It was almost too pretty to build. Almost. When I was discussing my project goals with my LBS guy, he suggested that I should just hang it on the wall as a bare frame for fear of it getting damaged when riding. I’m glad I built it. I have way more into it than I would have thought, but it’s the bike I pull off the wall while the others wait.
Non tapered 1-1/8″ steer tubes are getting scarce. I just picked up a new Rockshox on Price Point. I’ll install it this week, but I don’t think the extra 20mm will be noticeable once I set the sag.
Interesting that they claim it to be a prototype. A good friend of mine used to work for and then owned a bike shop which sold Schwinns when they were building these and the Homegrowns. He also raced BMX and was sponsored by Schwinn and rode this same BMX bike. He described the yoke to a T and says that it made the rear triangle very stiff and was according to him, the fastest accelerating bike he had ever ridden. He used to road race in college at UCSB, so he wasn’t new to bikes by any means.
Congrats. It it were mine, I’d want it true to the original. At the end of the day however, it’s your bike and should be built to suit your taste. How are you going to build it up?
