MemberHey Jeff, Just for giggles, I went to Pro Bike Supply’s website and did a search for Fox DPS with a 5.5″ eye to eye and it looks like they offer five different shocks starting at $255. I think I paid right at that for mine and it works really well.
Cheers!

Is there a model number on the shock?

Not that I can see, it’s just a “DPS” as far as I can tell.

So the rear shock can be ordered from Fox? I am interested in ordering one. Can you tell me the process?

Jeff,
I’m sorry I can’t be of more help, but it was ordered for me by John Castellano when he looked over my frame before I built it. He still has a resale agreement with Fox, so he just offered to help me out. Apparently, it’s a fairly standard Fox DPS piece, so any bike shop should be able to order it for you.

what’s the eye to eye mesurement of the Fox rear shock?

It’s the same as the RockShox coil over that it replaced. I’m trying to remember… it’s either 5.5″ or 5.75″. John Castellano spec’d it for me and got it directly from Fox. It gives up 1/8″ of stroke which translates to about 3/4″ travel at the rear axle. It’s a DPS and so far it’s been completely trouble free.

MemberJeez, I didn’t realize how long it’s been since I was here. I built this up quite some time ago and it’s become my go to ride. Also converted it to 27.5 a few months back. It tips the scale at 24.8 lbs.

MemberI’ve had this discussion with both Jeremy Sycip and John Castellano and the concensus is that it’s not a good idea.
chuckha62
MemberThat’s the direction I was leaning, so I thank you sir, for confirming.

MemberOkay, next question… What’s the best technique for removing what remains of the existing decals? Heat? Goof off? I want to get it all off as clean as possible, so I can polish before I go back with a new decal set.
chuckha62
MemberYou’re right. I didn’t think that was the correct set, because it’s listed for a hardtail.

MemberWell that was quick. I went home for lunch and while I was there, the FedEx truck came bearing gifts. I totally forgot this has the Hayes 22mm Disc mount on the URT. I’m stoked. I need to give it a good cleaning. I may even polish the rear triangle. Now, if I could find a full set of decals for it.

Those later anodized frames are freaky light—sometimes scary light. Last one I threw up on a scale was 2.9 lbs. Schwinn chose to go with the anodized finish because it saved something like a couple ounces of weight.
The Bass Boat finishes were notoriously heavy—all that metal sparkle and clear coat.
”
Agreed. My fork at 3.4 lbs is a half pound heavier than my frame.

MemberYup! That’s the same frame I have, but built into a sub-20 lb. SS. It is my go to ride (except when I rode TWE in Moab, last fall).
Nice builds guys!
chuckha62
MemberDammit! That looks better than I had imagined. I was going to do one in addition to my chainring. Good job! I guess I’ll have to be a copycat now.

MemberNIce Jersey! As for the overheard comments, I had a guy sort of whisper to his riding partner that I was on a cheap Walmart Schwinn. His partner replied, “You don’t know what you’re looking at, do you?” I assume he filled him in beyond that, but I was out of earshot.
