Depends on what type brakes you are going to run up front. The Fox disc/v-brake compatible forks are harder to find, the disc are usually easier and a little less expensive. If you want to run a Rockshox SID (2001 to 2005 w/lock out) up front, they are usually significantly cheaper and easier to find, if you can live with the 28mm stanchions versus the 32mm stanchions on the Fox. I have both SIDs and Fox RL on my bikes, and they both ride well. I’m sure there are other options, but the air forks ride the best in my opinion.
80mm or 100mm travel rides nice. My son has a 100 mm on his hard tail, and I have an 80mm ready to go on my sweetspot frame. Just make sure it s an 1 1/8″ straight and isn’t a tapered steer tube.

That’s a sweet ride. If you replaced the chain recently, did you measure it against the old chain? If not , maybe the chain is too long.
The older SIDs are still one of the lightest forks out there and performs well especially if it is a dual air with a lock out. They aren’t difficult to rebuild either. Manuals are on-line. If you want a newer fork, you would have to find one with a straight, non tapered steer tube. I have an older Fox RLC on one of my bikes and it performs great.
If it is the bike pictured it is worth it. I would make a cash offer and see if he would come down a bit. Disc brakes would make it much sweeter. I paid $600 for an NOS frame a few years ago.
Is the Homegrown Factory top tube script white? It looks like white in the picture, but I have seen green script in the catalog.
