I recently purchased a ’99 Homegrown, I’m new to this but I’m interested in a possible SS conversion. Any tips would be appreciated.

I think you can get one of these:

    http://wheelsmfg.com/shimano-sram-single-speed-conversion-kit.html

Take off your extra chainring on crank, shorten your chain and you should be good to go. Make sure your chainline isn’t all wonky.

    (‘Wonky’ is a technical term.)

Oh man looking good. Don’t see too many of those blue Undergrounds. I think you had to have a super industry hookup back in the day to score one.

I think it looks pretty cool. Always good to build with exactly every single part and bit you want. If it is for your GF I am surprised she went for that saddle. Must be the sparkles.

oh lolz yeh there’s a ladies Titec floating around that gets put on for “real rides.” The sparklies pretty much just for pics and display, as is that saddle bag. It’s too small to fit anything useful.

I recently got a ’99 Homegrown, factory catalog says it came with 26×1.95 tires. Anyone know what tire sizes you can get away with?

    Thanks
I’ve run 2.25 with no problem at all. You may have to squeeze the tire through your brakes.

I know….at some point i would like to add one. I like the classy gentleman vibe Moby has going with this one too.

Aye thanks matey! I like to pretend we are a cultured and civil lot, when we’re not shredding it up offroad.

If bikes were cocktails, this one’s a Bombay Sapphire martini with an extra olive.

I always loved the dart paint scheme.
All original paint on this one with no dents. 🙂 I got it a couple of years ago after having looked for a LONG time for one, and then it just popped up. It’s the only one in my collection I actually had to track down; the others kinda just happened.

But the Rocket 88 clamp fits perfectly on my daughter’s 2001 HG Pro.
I’m thinking there are 2 slightly different sizes.
Wow that is weird, but that must be the case. Maybe the long travel fullies were built with a thicker and/or larger seattube?

I don’t have any of the later gen bikes to compare, but all of mine have the same seatpost size (26.8, with a 30.8 seat tube diameter).

Does this guy list his gear anywhere else? I don’t have a Fakebook account.

(And no, I don’t plan on making one anytime soon. Zuck’s made way too much money already trading off other people’s baby pictures.)

Pretty amazing collection just in that picture. Is that a 17″ black/red dart frame in the back?!
Thanks man, and nice catch! It’s my favorite one as well. The vintage Sachs brake levers were a find, to pull a Suntour XC Pro cantilever brake.

So, finally got my tax check and went to see John Castellano about my pivot bushings. Nice man, showed me some beautiful Silk Ti frames he has been working on- more like works of art!!

As to my bike; the bushings were good, he said they creak when wet, which has been the case. He did replace the Pivot sleeve as it was showing some wear on one side. I bought a tube of Jonniesnot for future use. John recommends it as it continues works in all weather conditions- especially very cold weather.

For anyone interested he does have bushings and sleeves in stock. He can be reached by phone or email.

Woot woot great followup! Thanks for the update and super pertinent information. In the past getting reliable info was akin to black magic. You have performed a great service for all the full suspension folks here.

I used XTR 952 shifters and derailleurs right outta the box. Hard to come by these days. The XTR crankset is pretty clean.
Super cool. I was looking into a retro-build a while back and some of the prices on the secondary market were scandolous! That era Shimano stuff is ‘just’ old enough now to be considered classics.

I’ve never seen a frame go for that much and it wasn’t even NOS. Sorry you didn’t get it. Somebody wanted it real bad. http://www.ebay.com/itm/252353158733?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPage…
Wow that’s pretty crazy. I don’t think I paid more than a couple hundred bucks for any of mine, and I haven’t seen prices like this anytime I’ve been keeping track.

That’s a dope OG parts pick. Man I wish I hung onto my older XTR stuff.

    Cool shirt, too.

Aye thanks mate! I keep hoarding my Homegrown gear; some stuff is starting to get really rare now.

    What is your gearing F&R?
I mistakenly posted it was a 1×9; it’s actually a 1×11 XTR 9000 cassette and drivetrain (I think 11-40) with a 36 up front? Maybe a 38.
